Islamic injunctions deal with the personal as well as social life of a man to ensure his purity and cleanliness in his body, clothing, food, environment, behavior, manners, thoughts and intentions.
The etiquette of hygiene in Islam appears unique when it is compared with those of other religions. In Islam, hygiene is not considered a matter of personal discretion. Rather, the ablution (Wudû`) is a mandatory act of worship, a pre-condition for a ritual prayer. A Muslim has to offer at least five obligatory prayers every day with purity in his heart and mind and cleanliness in his body and clothes. The prayer is also to be offered with a pure intention, on a pure spot. One can easily understand the beneficial effects and results a Muslim can gain by the repetition of the act. It is also mandatory to have shower or bath, subsequent to sexual intercourse, after a menstrual period and on some other occasions.
Required in addition to these acts of hygiene, are washing the teeth to prevent tooth decay, gum disease and halitosis; clipping fingernails and toenails; trimming the mustache, as well as shaving the hair of the pubes and the armpits. All of these requirements prove that Islam not only deals with man's spiritual needs, but also with his physical health
